LOS ANGELES—Marty Staff, who joined American Apparel in March, has left the company.
Staff joined American Apparel as its chief business develeopment officer and was responsible for growing the wholesale business, among other things. He had left JA Apparel, where he was CEO for seven years, in September, 2010.
Reached for comment, Staff said, “I was brought in to help stabilize the business and try to improve it and we’ve done that in a relatively short time. We’ve also signed some terrific international deals. I really respect what Dov has done, and was glad to have made a difference for him and American Apparel, but I think it’s time to move on and do it for myself. There is a lot of money out there looking for the right opportunity. And, there are still some good companies and brands with great domestic and international growth potential that could benefit from what I bring to the table.”
American Apparel CEO Dov Charney commented in a statement, “Marty is one of the most experienced and capable professionals in our business and his contributions to American Apparel have been very substantial. I have benefited greatly from his vision and insight. Marty is truly a dynamic figure in our industry and I wish him all the best as he moves to the next chapter of his iconic career.”
Marty Staff has been CEO of Hugo Boss, COO of Calvin Klein and VP of sales and marketing at Polo Ralph Lauren. His menswear career began at Bloomingdale’s, where he was an assistant buyer.
