NEW YORK—Topshop and its menswear counterpart Topman opened on Manhattan’s Broadway and Broome this morning to much media and celebrity fanfare. The New York store marks the British discount chain’s debut in the American market. At least three more U.S. stores—probably in Los Angeles, Boston and Miami—are rumored to be in the works.
The opening, which was originally scheduled for October last year, was delayed a few times. According to the chain’s owner, Sir Phillip Green, the delay was caused not by the recession, but by a series of construction and building permit problems.
Topshop and Topman have been compared to the Swedish fast fashion chain H&M, and to America’s Banana Republic. Retail prices at Topshop and Topman are more in line with H&M.
The 45-year-old U.K. institution re-launched its 90,000 square foot Oxford Circus, London location in 1998, which it calls the “world’s largest fashion store.” The chain has about 300 stores in the U.K. and 100 more internationally.
