Michael Bastian F/W13 show

The first thing you noticed, walking into the large midtown space Michael Bastian transformed for his F/W13 show was the scent, a layering of three fragrances by Aedes de Venustas that combined to evoke something of a Roman Catholic cathedral. An installation of black origami birds flocked across the walls in their hundreds that added to the atmosphere, and as the collection walked, the picture was complete. A far cry from the colorful Americana that marked Michael’s early collections, and perhaps edgier than recent sportswear-centric seasons, Michael’s offering for F/W13 had a dark side, with British glam rock accents in the form of a black feather vest under a herringbone tweed jacket, paired with Mod-inspired eyewear from Randolph Engineering x Michael Bastian, and French and Italian influences also present. While traditional Americana was still inherent, in a plaid or chambray shirt, brown leather braces, a suede motorcycle jacket, and Davey Crockett raccoon tails swinging low from back pockets, the European influence combined exquisitely for what will surely be global appeal.
