Needless to say I was a bit nervous on my very first market appointment as an MR summer intern. After all, I had no idea what to expect. Fortunately, the appointment was with Warren Donner, president of a young men’s/contemporary collection called EDGE, a division of WDNY.
Donner first appeared from behind glass doors sporting skin tight blue jeans, a camouflage sportcoat and a flowing canary yellow scarf. Walking toward us with assertion, his yellow leather boots click-clacked in tune with his jingling bold silver bracelets (that he also designed). But even with his outrageous rock-star image, Donner is anything but intimidating.
His collection is just as accessible. Featuring value-priced contemporary separates, Donner explains that he’s “trying to do in men’s what we’ve been so successful with in women’s: trendy fashion, good quality, great price points.”
Indeed. The line features very trendy sportcoats, tighter and shorter than most, in cool fabrics like camo canvas, pleather, herringbone tweed, corduroy, pinstripes and sweater knits at suggested retails averaging $49 to $98. I loved the attention to detail: animal print collars, pleather sleeves, velvet trims, floral linings. Hybrid (removable bib) models, hooded sportcoats and evening wear (velvets, a knit tuxedo jacket) all looked great, as did some belted and studded numbers. Also strong were suit separates featuring skinny pants and vests and some very special outerwear, all value-priced. Look for lightweight sportcoats worn with shorts in the spring ’14 collection.
Current Edge accounts include Lord & Taylor, Macys.com, JackThreads and other great stores. Congrats to Warren Donner and his team (Jerry Boyle and Edward Zhu) for a very edgy presentation!
