Philanthropy through fashion often comes in the form of sponsorship, like Gucci’s recent Chime for Change initiative, or the sale of specially created product, like the Fashion Against Aids collections from H&M. More recently though, brands that are created with a specific cause in mind, like Toms shoes, or Warby Parker eyewear, are seeing huge success. Proposition Love jewelry was established in 2012 when Sam Street and Jonathan Tack teamed up with top jewelry designer Julie Harstein to develop a fine jewelry collection in support of same-sex marriage. “While looking for wedding bands we found there was a void for the gay community that needed to be filled. While many gay couples enjoy traditional wedding bands, there are a large number of couples that want their designs to be unique and fashion forward,” says Street. With initiatives like a recent auction for rings designed by celebrities including Kathy Griffin, Tori Spelling and Perez Hilton, Proposition Love donates 10 percent of profits to The Point Foundation, Elton John Aids Foundation, Lambda Legal, NoH8, GLSEN and The Trevor Project. “Our message from the beginning has been that Love is Love and everyone should have the right to equality.”
