The number of menswear brands showing at Lincoln Center this season was surprisingly low — a handful perhaps — with the majority off site and independent of the official Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. While London Collections: Men is a resounding success, at least in part due to its solidarity with an overwhelming majority of shows and events taking place as part of the British Fashion Council’s menswear initiative, the esprit de corps in New York is in somewhat stark comparison.
Erin Hawker and her team at Agentry PR are working to change all that, with New York’s first unified menswear showcase, appropriately called New York Men’s Day. “Last season we decided to couple Ernest Alexander and Bespoken together as they were both GQ’s Best New Menswear Designers in America 2013,” explains Hawker. “It was a major success in the eyes of the editorial community, as we made it very easy for them, so this season we decided to expand with six designers, all emerging talent.”
Along with presentations from Alexander and Bespoken, the event at Industria Superstudio also presented collections from Carlos Campos (styled by the wonderful Julie Ragolia), Bosideng (designed by the incomparable Amelia Pretious), David Hart, Lucio Castro and Antonio Azzuolo. “The idea is really to support young designers,” says Hawker, “but also to support buyers and the media.”
With a huge turnout and positive responses across the board, the future of NYMD looks bright. “NYMD was a huge success,” adds Hawker, “and we have been approached by at least ten other designers for September, so hoping to evolve this even more!”
