May Sales: Clothing is Off, But Sportswear Picks Up

Retail consultant Steve Pruitt comments on May sales trends.

May continued to be a rough month for menswear retailers, especially in clothing, which was down 38% against last year. Clothing has been affected both by its high transactional cost, which many men can’t afford these days, and the fact that it is considered a work wardrobe, when many are out of work.

Sportswear has picked up with the warmer weather, and we are seeing particular strength in polos and tees.

Women’s outperformed men’s again last month, showing that women are more open to shopping in the current climate.

The good news is early reports indicate that June sales have been much stronger, and some retailers are close to even against last year. We expect the sales trends to brighten in coming weeks.
