We Do Windows: Zac Posen at Bergdorf Goodman

To kick off last Thursday’s Fashion’s Night Out, Bergdorf Goodman put Zac Posen in one of its Fifth Avenue store windows, where passersby watched as he hand-painted dresses.

When I arrived at 5:30, there were about 15 fashionistas and photographers milling around waiting for something to happen. By the time Posen arrived 10 minutes later wearing a metallic linen blazer and diamond tiara, a crowd of about 100 had formed. My guess is that all but the original few had been drawn in by the commotion.

Posen put on a good show and engaged the audience as he worked. It was worth watching, despite a silly model (I don’t think she realized she wasn’t the star of the show) and a slightly cranky crowd (at one point I heard a photographer yell at a tourist who got too close, “You’re not even credentialed! Don’t touch me!”).

Posen used brushes and spray paint in purple, orange, red, yellow and pink to liven up the plain white satin dress, and used different lace swatches to add pattern.

The dresses were later available for sale at Bergdorf’s.
