Item of the Week: Panama Hats

Bring on the Bourbon! Panama hats favored across the board.

Start muddling the mint and sugar for juleps, the Kentucky Derby, first of U.S. horse racing’s “triple crown” events, runs on Saturday, as it has the first Saturday in May ever since 1875! My money’s on Jenny Craig’s (yes, that Jenny Craig) Sidney’s Candy, but Derby weekend wouldn’t be complete without a sweet hat.

Dorfman Pacific’s Scala Classico Panama is just the thing every gentleman, Southern or otherwise, needs to complete his race day outfit. The hats retail for $90 to $150, depending on trim and materials. One model sold at Churchill Downs is even customized with a leather band stamped with the name of the track.

Dorfman Pacific has been selling hats in the Kentucky Museum store at the Downs for years, but business accelerates in the days leading up to the event at four different venues around the track. Debra Highsmith, Dorfman’s VP of sales, attends each year to help with selling and says “It’s like a tidal flow. One moment the store is literally overflowing with shoppers. The next virtually every single one disappears to the stands or their boxes in Millionaire’s Row in time for the next race, and the store is deserted. Once the race is over, back they come and it fills right up again with eager buyers.”

Each week, MR’s editors will comment on a product we’ve seen in the market. It could be an emerging trend, a novel take on a classic or something that just caught our eyes.
