Fall Trends for Young Men
January 21, 2008

New and fresh has been the buzz around here lately. I met with Tim Bess of Doneger last week to get the scoop on what to expect in the Young Men’s market for fall ’08. It’s obvious business is far from booming, but I have guy friends that will stop at nothing to have the freshest, hottest gear (even if that means they can’t eat for a week.). But if there is nothing new to buy, then they’ll spend their money elsewhere. That raises the question of how to get them to spend their money on apparel.

The start of market week is the ideal time for buyers to invest in product that is different, fun and fresh in the hope that risk will be profitable in the end. Playing it too safe may not be the right move because at a time like this, guys already have their basics and don’t need any more of the same.

During my inside look at the market, Bess told me that color and colorblocking is going to be big for fall ’08, and that doesn’t necessarily mean neon and bright. Accessories like printed belts, skinny ties and muffler scarves can be used to “pop the garment” and add excitement to the look.

The 90’s will also be an influencer with inspiration taken from bands like Nirvana and The Wu Tang Clan. Don’t worry, the Seattle grunge scene is not coming back, but we will see grunge with a twist, or as Bess called it, “happy grunge.” Upbeat and colorful plaids and flannels are looking hot.

The 80s Ska/British movement is another trend for fall ’08. Bess said, “It’s the next generation of rocker, it’s an attitude and it’s edgy.” Pieces like retro vintage cardigans, boots and of course, vests will all make and impact this season.

I can’t wait to check out all the new lines at Blue, Project, Capsule and the Collective. It is my first market week so I look forward to meeting you all, let me know your booth number and I’ll be sure to stop by!
