Okay, so I've never been much of one for New Year's Resolutions, but how about "New Season's Resolutions"? Yes, Jonathan, I have been a horrible blogger the last few months. In today's Internet age, certainly as a journalist, I've been reprehensible. So, just as I, coincidentally, started a brand new notebook on Friday just in time for Saturday's opening of MRket and the unofficial kick-off of the spring 2010 season, so I promise to blog more often. Oh, wait. What's that all the motivational experts say? You're supposed to be very specific and focused on your goals to really make them come true? Okay, let's try this: "I promise to blog at least once a week." There. Now I expect all of you to hold me accountable.
So speaking of the spring 2010 market.... At one point one of my coworkers was wondering where I was getting the energy to keep covering today's show. It's simple--I was coasting on the energy of the menswear vendors in attendance. As Raffi Shaya (Full disclosure: my former employer) put it, "If you have the right items, there is no recession." From your mouth to God's ears, Raffi! No matter what happens with today's economic climate and the retailers who are truly our heroes right now, the vendors who are supplying this market are working hard to provide colorful, innovative product that will encourage the guy who (hopefully) finally has a dollar to spend to get into the shop and pick up...a new suit? Maybe. A new sportcoat? More likely. A new colorful, patterned pair of socks? or pocket square? or shirt? For sure!
Here are a few highlights from today's show (and if you don't see YOUR booth represented, just remember, I might be keeping it under my hat for future blogs, MR articles, etc.)
Art Deco ties at Format.
Gelato linen at Luchiano Visconti.
And colorful trousers from Vigano's 20050 (their Italian postal code) collection.
Ferrante's polos.
Borsalino hats.
Marcello's new Zachary Scott updated traditional collection.
Kroon's unconstructed, enzyme-washed jackets.
Ross Graison's lighter touch.
Raffi Shaya shows off his new polos.
British Apparel Collection's INTARSIA socks!
Santorelli's Ken Griffin: Sorry I only got him with his eyes closed, because those eyes have an incredible sense of color! He's wearing Santorelli's muffler...
...and these are the hypnotic pocket squares he's designed for them!
