Hugh just wouldn't believe....
December 15, 2008

Mostly, I tend to ignore People Magazine. I know I shouldn't. All that hype about “Brangelina” and “Gossip Girl” might not interest me personally, but I know that wherever stars lead, consumers follow. It might be my imagination, but it seems like celebrities are having even more impact lately: almost every fashion show has its share of front row luminaries (of varying degrees), they are supplanting models in ad campaigns and even design capsule fashion collections.

But once a year, People gets my attention, no matter what, with the “Sexiest Man” issue. It's the one time of year that I've been tempted to, and yes have even sometimes bought, the magazine. (Okay, it was 1986, Mark Harmon...and I still think he's adorable.) The publication's website has a section that shows all 22 past “sexiest men,” including repeat winners like Richard Gere and George Clooney. And wait until you see Patrick Swayze's “Roadhouse”-era hair...in retrospect, with a lot of these guys, it's easy to say “what were they thinking?” Yet it seems like, every single year, when they name the sexiest guy, I think “Yep. They nailed it again. He's the rightful heir.”

So I guess I was a little more excited than usual this year to see that Hugh Jackman was the winner. I've been a little bit in love with him since “Swordfish” (just praying that towel would fall off while he was practicing his chip shot on the roof of his trailer), not to mention the fact that he can actually act! Witness the contrast between his leather-clad Wolverine role in “X-Men,” versus that of the flamboyant Peter Allen in “The Boy from Oz.” Truly a man that looks great in just about anything that he wears...or doesn't.

His off-camera style is great, too. The people at Isaia tell me that he's been wearing their label everywhere lately, from a MoMA event honoring Baz Luhrmann and, of course to the New York City premiere of “Australia.” There, I'm told it was in a made-to-measure design. (Um, Gianluca? I am available for these sessions, and do know how to operate a measuring tape!) Of course the folks at Isaia know how to stay with a theme, and also dressed fellow Australian and media mogul Rupert Murdoch for the event (I'm only interested in measuring that man's wallet.)

Matt Damon, “Sexiest” for 2008, has also been spotted wearing the label, as has Jake Gyllenhaal. People Magazine? Gianluca? If Jake's in the running for next year, my calendar's wide open!
