Mac Retiring? You Must Be Kidding!!
December 03, 2008

It was a beautiful party last week at Arno’s that Steve Wax from Bounty Trading threw for Mac Alberg (65 years in the men’s industry, more than 35 with Macy’s and 22 with Bounty) and Stan Bauman, (40+ years at Bounty, in their women’s division.) Among those in attendance were Bounty founders Bob and Sara Wax and clearly, there was a lot of love in the room that day. (How else does a family business entice so many great employees to stay for decades?)

In presenting his tribute, Steve Wax spoke about how much he’s learned from Mac over the years, and how Mac’s added much class to the organization. (In fact, Steve once told me that he originally hired Mac because of the way he folded his camel hair coat and carefully placed his felt fedora on top of it when he first came for an interview.)

I’ve known Mac Alberg for 50-something years and I cannot begin to list all the things I’ve learned from him: that the harder you work, the luckier you get; that dressing well makes a huge difference in how people perceive you; that treating people with respect pays back in spades; that listening is the best way of learning; that negotiating works best when both sides win; that a handshake is worth every bit as much as a signed order; that nice guys often do end up on top.

As the nicest guy I know, Mac has always been on top in my book. And while he’s allegedly moving on, I’d bet big bucks that he’s not leaving the menswear industry he so dearly cherishes and that has been his life work. “I’m exploring a few opportunities and keeping my options open” was all I could get from him. Stay tuned.

karen,
what a great entry!
I am really sorry I missed out on that party.
I can proudly state that Mac was a close friend of my father Arthur Roth. And these past years when I saw Mac a Magic and in the Axis office, I was always met with warmth and a touching and meaningful hello and good talk.
We were unsuccessful in getting Bounty and Axis/ TSR together, but the meetings were at the highest level of professionalism and just plain fun that I have experienced...ever.
I will try and contact Mac for a lunch or drink, but please send him my very, very best.
Will call you this week on my new Nanshan China project, which goes very well. '

With Mac's retirement, the industry truely is going through a major change!!!!

best,

larry roth

Great article, Karen! Mac is, undoubtedly, the ambassador of the garment industry. More than just the consummate professional, Mac Alberg is the "Creme de la Creme" in the game of life. There is no one in this world I have more love and admiration for. The irony is... Mac is a man of great humility and, consequently, it is just wonderful to see him recognized notwithstanding his unassuming nature. -Scott Alberg
