Don’t call him the Godfather of Fashion: he’d much prefer Godmother. Or how about Fairy Godmother...
Laughter is always on the menu when sharing a meal with fashion commentator Leon Hall. At a wonderful dinner at Pomodoro on Columbus Avenue (arranged by mutual friends Lynn Spindell and Linda Derefler), Leon proved himself as irreverent and charming as ever. (His self-deprecating humor and fashion practicality are much-appreciated assets in an era when fashionistas tend to take themselves far too seriously...)
So what’s he up to these days? When he’s not doing Fashion Emergency on E! or interviewing Red Carpet celebrities with Joan and Melissa or giving keynote speeches at jewelry trade shows or dishing on the talk show circuit or hawking his hoop earrings on QVC, Leon is always involved in some worthwhile charity, most recently Help is on the Way Today (helping kids with HIV and AIDS). But lately, he’s spending most of his time on the road with a new show for CS-TV Sports (a division of CBS Sports) called Tailgate Superstars.
His words of wisdom on fashion: “Looking good is not about age or size or money; it’s all about proportion. My best advice is to get naked, look in the mirror, and outline your body on the mirror with a bar of soap. Then you can more easily play up the good and camouflage the bad. It’s really very simple. Bad neck? Wear a turtleneck...”
Leon himself was in no need of turtlenecks as he looked absolutely marvelous: young, healthy, glowing. A new love interest perhaps? He wasn’t talking but after several glasses of wine, we somehow coaxed a name out of him: Dr. Neal Gorden...
Other Leon Hall recommends:
NYC Restaurants: 5 Ninth, Fig, Olive, Vince and Eddie’s, Paris Commune, Roberto Passon
TV: The Tudors and Rome on HBO
Movie: Strangers in Good Company (“I was mesmerized by the women in this film!”)
Music: Reba McEntire and LeAnn Rimes “When You Love Someone Like That” and Eros Ramazzoti and Anastacia “I Belong to You.”
Store: Neiman Marcus (“There is still no store on earth that compares to Mr. Stanley’s incredible creation.”)
Escape: Montreux, Switzerland
Reads: The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, both by Khaled Hosseini
Fashion Wish List: A croc coat in chocolate brown, Donald Pliner shoes, Jhane Barnes sweaters, jeans from Gap and True Religion, lots of outrageous gloves and scarves (“a safe way for men over 40 to add a touch of outrageous...”)
Fashion Advice: “The fit and the fabric are far more important than the designer or the pricetag. (And you can etch those words in solid marble...)”
The Perfect Man: George Clooney’s look and humor, Daniel Craig’s body and heat, Eros Ramazzotti’s voice and hair, Bill Gates’ bank account.
Newest Love: “I opened my own cabaret show last year to great success; I’m now working on a new and bigger show to take on the road. So I’m doing a lot of singing and tailgating these days: what a wonderful way to finish life (but not any time soon...)”
