WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—The better men’s specialty retailer Norman Stockton is closing its last store. “We’re closing up as of March 27,” said owner Hill Stockton. “We’re really proud of what we’ve done, for as long as we’ve done it. It’s a shame for Winston-Salem—not just because Norman Stockton is closing—because stores like ours in general are what give communities their character. Every time a store like ours closes, whether it’s men’s, women’s or children’s, it adds to the homogenization of retail in that city.”
Stockton cited numerous factors for the closing, including tough times in Winston-Salem’s three main industries: banking (Wachovia is now owned by San Francisco-based Wells Fargo), textiles and tobacco.
“The tough thing is the relationships. All of my best friends are in this business,” Stockton laments. “I’ll just have to go to some of the shows so people can see how relaxed I am now!” He added that his next job will be in development and fund-raising for his old private high school.
Founder Norman Stockton opened his eponymous store in Winston-Salem in 1909. Norman’s son Richard Stockton ran it for decades until about 1998 when his son, current owner Hill Stockton took over. A 2,000 square foot Chapel Hill, N.C. location closed in May of last year. At one time there were three locations.
The 6,000 square foot men’s store, which sold brands like Zegna, Canali, Hickey-Freeman and Burberry, is staging a going-out-of-business sale now. Stockton owns his building, and plans to lease out the space.
