Obituary: Steve Kriegel

September 04, 2008

Stephen Kriegel of Anthology sportswear died after a long battle with cancer. He was 52.

Kriegel, who is survived by his wife Corinne and children Natasha (14) and Trevor (13), died in his wife’s arms on their 25th anniversary. A funeral was held in Great Neck, Long Island on Sunday, August 31.

He met his wife Corinne Epstein Kriegel in the fall 1982 at the Magic tradeshow when it was still in Los Angeles. They were introduced by a mutual friend and learned that they lived three miles from each other in Queens. They were married a year later. “We were the epitome of a garmento couple,” she said, adding that he was not a typical garmento. She works in children’s wear and was with Izod-Lacoste at the time. “We were married on August 28th and he died on August 28th on our 25th anniversary. And August 28th was the last day of the shows this year.”

Stephen Kriegel’s career in apparel included work with firms as varied as Members Only, Randy Allen, YSL, Li & Fung and Kevoman. He joined Anthology 12 years ago.

His business partner Kookie Cheng and the rest of his colleagues at Anthology offered a tribute: “We all learned so much from him, not only about the product, but also from his belief that the trust and respect cultivated by our partnerships with our retailers, was more important than the numbers. He always believed in the strength and integrity of relationships and lived his life on every level, by that code.”

Kriegel’s family has set up a guestbook in conjunction with the New York Times obituary. To view the guestbook, click here.
