Item of the Week: David Hart & Co. Ties

By: Harry Sheff

October 16, 2008

This week we’re highlighting ties by Brooklyn-based designer David Hart. An August article in Crain’s New York Business, illustrated by a tie festooned with wind-up robots, announced Hart’s deal with Bergdorf Goodman for an exclusive line that debuts in February. His David Hart & Co. ties will retail for about $150.

Hart, who has worked as a designer for Anna Sui and Tommy Hilfiger, makes all of his ties in New York City. “It’s an art that’s dying,” he says of well-made ties. “I feel like that’s the major problem with neckwear. There’s no one out there making a ‘design’ tie. The men who appreciate ties can’t find anything.”

Hart’s designs—patterns that include saddle shoes, shaving cream cans with straight razors, pin-up girls and bullet bras, sock monkeys and toy robots—are exquisitely detailed. “I really like the mash-up between the science fiction and pin-up cultures,” he says. Rod Serling, host of “The Twilight Zone,” exemplifies Hart’s aesthetic: trim and dapper with a smart and mysterious edge.

That look has managed to find a home among stylish young men six decades later. “The 20-something generation loves to dress up. Even with bow ties. Ten years ago, you never saw anyone in their twenties wearing bow ties. Now they’re all over. It’s a cool, sharp look.”

Hart is working on a Father’s Day collection now. He hopes to expand to dress shirts and tailored clothing—all locally produced, of course.
